FG Reveals New National Health Policy

A new national health policy has been approved by the National Council On Health and is expected to be sent to Federal Executive Council for approval.
According to the Minister of Health, Prof. Isaac Adewole, the new policy captures the essentials of ensuring the reduction of maternal and child mortality, wider immunization coverage and better control and prevention of public health emergencies.
Briefing journalists in Lagos, Prof. Adewole explained that a new strategy to address the surgical need of indigent Nigerians is now being implemented under the rapid result initiative.
“There are so many poor Nigerians all over the place with surgical ailments and nobody is looking after them and we therefore conceived the idea of the rapid result initiative.
“We selected 10,000 of them to start with this year. So, 10,000 free surgeries for poor Nigerians. The only qualification is that you must be poor,” he said.
He further explained that 46 federal tertiary health institutions have been identified to handle the scheme by screening the applicants and performing the surgeries.

Super Eagles Tops Group B After Nigeria defeats Algeria (3-1)

Nigeria’s Super Eagles captain John Obi Mikel is out to make it six points from six in two Russia 2018 world cup qualifiers against Algeria.
After 10 minutes of play, Victor Moses from the wing trouble Algerians to unleash his electric pace and direct running, charging at the North Africans’ back line. Skipping inside onto his left, his weaker foot, however, he drags his shot wide of the near post.
15mins of play, Saphir Taider tries his luck from range, but his effort is too central and all it does is mean Daniel Akpeyi’s first save of the game is a simple one.
After 25 minutes of tense play in the match #NGAALG Victor Moses directness gets its reward.
Driving through the centre of the field, he gets a spot of luck as some poor defending from Belkaroui gifts the No.11 a second opportunity, which he grabs with both hands, firing into the bottom left corner to give Nigeria the lead 1:0.
When all the teams were settling for the end of the first half. Mikel at 42mins of the match, he wheels away and punishes the Algerians for not playing to the whistle.
Algeria thought Nigerian’s captain was offside following Oghenekaro Etebo’s through ball, but flag stays down and was correctly adjudged to be onside, played on by Algerians Aissa Mandi and with the defence stood stock still, Mikel slots home from close range.
Game on! After missing one of Algeria’s better chances of the first half, Nabil Bentaleb fires a rasping drive into the roof of the Nigerian net from 25 yards.
The superb goal for a midfielder with serious talent, that was a cracker. Cameroon and Zambia will be celebrating that goal almost as much as the Algerians.
With Algeria throwing men forward, a four-on-two break saw the ball cycled out to an unmarked Victor Moses, who slots in to ensure the Super Eagles move on to six points at the 92 minutes.
Victor Moses’ brace tightens Nigeria’s grip on a seriously tough Group B, seeing them sat on six points from two games.
Algeria had looked like tightening up the standings, following Nabil Bentaleb’s thumping finish, but Moses struck late on the break to bolster the hosts’ hopes of making it to Russia.
Nigeria’s win leaves them in full control of Group B, following Zambia and Cameroon ending all square. The latter’s trip to face Nigeria may well be crucial in deciding whether the Super Eagles can be caught.
The match ended 3-1 in favour of the Super Eagles of Nigeria.

Nigerian Soldiers Kills Female Suicide Bombers

The Nigerian Army has gunned down three female suicide bombers around Maiduguri in the early hours of Friday.

A report by the PPRO Borno command, Victor Isuku, confirmed that the women who were sighted in Umulari village, along Maiduguri/Damboa road, near Mulai, by the military patrol team around 5:30 AM, had IED’s strapped to their bodies.

As the officers shot at them, the IED on two of them exploded, killing all three, while the unexploded IED on the third woman, was rendered safe and detonated by Police bomb disposal Unit who promptly mobilized to the scene.

This is another one in the series of foiled suicide bombing attacks by terrorists.
On Thursday November 3, a statement by a spokesman for the Nigerian Army, Colonel Sani Usman, said troops at a military location ‘gunned down’ a suspected suicide bomber who made attempts to attack the military formation.

The troops killed all four attackers including two suicide bombers and also recovered some items from them in the operation.

However, Colonel Usman, stated that the military lost a soldier in the process.
Also on October 30, troops of the Operation Lafiya Dole, stopped the plans of a suicide bomber along the same Damboa road in Maiduguri.

Donald Trump's America

In Donald Trump's America, undocumented immigrants will be deported en masse, Arab Americans will be racially profiled and the United States will "bomb the s--- out of ISIS."
In Trump's America, foreign Muslims will be banned from the US, Syrian refugees sent back to their war-torn country and free trade agreements torn to shreds. And, of course, the US will build a "great wall" on the US-Mexico border, which Mexico will have to pay for.
In Trump's America, the US attorney general will push to indict the president's general election rival.
That's if everything goes as the Republican nominee has promised during his insurgent presidential campaign.
The newly-minted President-elect is now faced with the task of turning his hardline policy proposals into concrete legislative proposals and ultimately law. But with many of his more extreme proposals opposed even by some Republicans in Congress, Trump will face an uphill climb to implement the very proposals that drew his most ardent supporters to his insurgent campaign.
His challenges with uniting the American public behind his proposals were on clear display Wednesday as protests broke out from Boston to Los Angeles.
Should he succeed, though, in implementing the policies that carried him to victory in the Republican primaries and ultimately the general election, Trump would usher in a radical reimagining of the United States from its laws to its values.
Trump's very election broke a set of barriers, becoming the first billionaire president and the first to have never before served in public office or the military. And while his business experience was a key part of his appeal to a broad swath of Americans, they will also raise unprecedented questions of conflict of interest and could pose challenges to his ability to sell legislative proposals that could affect his personal bottom line.
Beyond his businessman credo, it seems voters were most drawn to Trump's promises to shake up Washington and implement radical change in every sector of government.
    Obamacare
Trump has repeatedly promised to "immediately repeal and replace" Obamacare, to start. That is something congressional Republicans have been eager to accomplish, but unable to without a Republican president. But even with Trump in office, repealing and crafting a replacement for the law will be an arduous task in Congress, where Senate Democrats will fight the slim Republican majority's efforts.
It's still unclear exactly what Trump's replacement will look like. He has vowed it will be "terrific" and said it will involve knocking down state insurance lines and incentivizing the establishment of health savings accounts.

    Immigration

Even as Trump has unrelentingly promised at his rallies to build a wall on the US southern border with Mexico, his plan does not yet appear to have the backing of Republican Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, who repeatedly dodged a question on whether he supports the wall.
"I want to achieve border security the way that's most effective," he told CNN's Manu Raju Wednesday when asked about it.
The border wall proposal is just one of a slew of controversial immigration policies proffered by the real estate mogul, who launched his campaign by labeling undocumented Mexican immigrants criminals and "rapists."
He has also vowed to deport all undocumented immigrants. In the latest iteration of that policy, he focused on the deportation of criminal undocumented immigrants, but he has not forsaken his pledge to deport all estimated 11 million who currently reside here illegally.

    Trade

On trade, the Republican nominee has vowed to renegotiate or completely withdraw the US from NAFTA, the free trade agreement with Canada and Mexico that Trump has dubbed the "worst trade deal in history." He could single-handedly do that without Congress, just as he could stymie the Trans-Pacific Partnership he has railed against.
He has also pledged to go after Chinese currency manipulation and impose additional tariffs of as much as 35% on certain foreign countries and on US companies that move their factories abroad -- which could see consumer goods rise by that same percentage.
Trump's presidency could radically alter the increasingly interconnected global economy, which has shot in the direction of more free trade, not less, in recent years. His presidency could usher in a more protectionist era.

    Terrorism

Trump will also seek to rethink how the US combats terrorists, tossing aside the attempts by Presidents George W. Bush and Barack Obama to bring Muslim-Americans and other Muslim countries into the fold, rather than risk alienating them.
Trump has said he would seek to work with Muslim countries eager to join in the fight against ISIS, but he has also stoked Islamophobic sentiment in the US and proclaimed, "Islam hates us."
His rhetoric on the campaign trail and policy proposals on that matter could prove a roadblock to those efforts of increased cooperation with Muslim majority countries. During his presidential bid, Trump called for the creation of a national database to register all Muslims living in the US, called for targeted surveillance of US mosques.
And last December, he famously called for a "total and complete shutdown of Muslims entering the United States," a proposal he has never explicitly retracted. Trump has since focused on his "extreme vetting" proposal, which would include a ban on individuals from terror-prone countries, though he has not outlined which countries will be included in that list.
It is still unclear exactly how he will take on ISIS in Syria and Iraq. Trump has at times said he is open to sending in tens of thousands of US troops and consistently vowed to "bomb the s***t out of ISIS."
At other times, he's said he would like to keep the US out of the civil war in Syria, and instead favored ceding regional influence to Russia.
He has promised to work toward a closer relationship with Russia, which has ensconced itself as a top US adversary in recent years, and has promised to renegotiate the Iran deal, which he has trashed.

    Economic policy

Trump's economic proposals have focused on tearing down govern
ment regulations he views as overly burdensome on US businesses -- which
would include undoing environmental protections erected under the Obama administration -- and reforming the US tax code.
But a cloud of uncertainty hangs over how the whopping across-
the-board tax cuts he has promised will affect the US deficit. While he has promised
to keep the proposals revenue-neutral, tax policy experts have said Trump's
proposals could add billions, if not trillions, of dollars to the US debt.
Ultimately, many in Washington and across the country are now wondering
how much of Trump's campaign promises will the soon-to-be president
stick to once he walks into the Oval Office and the Situation Room.
Beyond the campaign promises and incendiary rhetoric during his 17
months campaigning for his job as president, Trump also repeatedly
touted his willingness to compromise and reach "deals."
Pressed on his immigration proposals in March on Fox News, Trump offered a simple reply: "Everything is negotiable."

Anti-Trump Protests Breaks Out Across American Cities

This is in spite of defeated Democratic presidential candidate, Hillary Clinton having conceded and urged Americans to support President-elect, Donald trump, in ensuring sustainable development and ultimately a united America.
In New York, thousands of protesters filled streets in midtown Manhattan as they made their way to Trump Tower, Trump’s gilded home on Fifth Avenue. Hundreds of others gathered at a Manhattan park and shouted “Not my president.”
A demonstration of about 6,000 people blocked traffic in Oakland, California, police said. Protesters threw objects at police in riot gear, burned trash in the middle of an intersection, set off fireworks and smashed store front windows.
Police responded by throwing chemical irritants at the protesters, according to a Reuters witness.
In downtown Chicago, an estimated 1,800 people gathered outside the Trump International Hotel and Tower, chanting phrases like “No Trump! No KKK! No racist USA.”
Chicago police closed roads in the area, impeding the demonstrators’ path. There were no immediate reports of arrests or violence there.
“I’m just really terrified about what is happening in this country,” said 22-year-old Adriana Rizzo in Chicago, who was holding a sign that read: “Enjoy your rights while you can.”
In Seattle, police responded to a shooting with multiple victims near the scene of anti-Trump protests. Police said it was unrelated to the demonstrations.
Protesters railed against Trump’s campaign pledge to build a wall along the border with Mexico to keep immigrants from entering the United States illegally.
Hundreds also gathered in Philadelphia, Boston and Portland, Oregon, on Wednesday evening, and organizers planned rallies in San Francisco, Los Angeles and Oakland, California.
In Austin, the Texas capital, about 400 people marched through the streets, police said.
A representative of the Trump campaign did not respond immediately to requests for comment on the protests.
Trump in his victory speech earlier on Wednesday, had  promised to uphold a united America and reclaim the nation’s destiny when he takes over.
He promised to be president for all Americans, saying: “It is time for us to come together as one united people.”
He also praised Clinton saying: “Hillary fought very hard. She has worked very long and hard over a long period of time. We have a sense of gratitude for her service”.
Donald Trump is set to become the 45th President of the United States as he won with 289 electoral college seats as against Clinton’s 218.
The Republican candidate won key battleground states – Florida, North Carolina and Ohio.

The Simpsons Predicted a Donald Trump Presidency 16 Years Ago

Over 16 years ago, “The Simpsons”, an American show, predicted a Trump Presidential win. According to the the creator of the show, Matt Groening, he told The Guardian that : “We predicted that he would be president back in 2000 – but (Trump) was of course the most absurd placeholder joke name that we could think of at the time, and that’s still true.”
    “It’s beyond satire.”
But that’s not the only prediction “The Simpsons” have gotten right. In 1997, they predicted the Ebola outbreak, they also predicted 9/11 attack in New York and genetically modified organisms(GMO’s) being a thing, amongst other things.
In a 2000 episode called "Bart to the Future," Bart has a reverie of his life as a 40-year-old adult. In the vision, his sister Lisa Simpson is the country's first "straight female" president.
In one scene, Bart visits her in the Oval Office where she's conducting a meeting about the country's current economic status.
"As you know, we've inherited quite a budget crunch from President Trump," she tells her staff as they realize the economy is in a complete decline. "The country is broke! How could that be?" she adds before Bart storms through the office doors.

US Election: PMB Congratulates US President-elect Trump

This comes after other world leaders have also sent congratulatory messages to the U.S President-elect, who had a stunning victory over his female counterpart, Hillary Clinton.
One person that had been described as Trump’s supporter by Mrs Clinton, Mr Vladimir Putin, also sent a congratulatory message to the president-elect.
In a telegram to Mr Trump, Russian president congratulated Mr Trump and expressed confidence that Washington and Moscow would deepen relations.
President Buhari who sees the outcome as a triumph of the will of the people, also expressed that he looks forward to working with Trump.
This according to him is to strengthen the already established friendly relations between both countries on several fronts including foreign policy priorities, anti-terrorism, peace and security, economic growth and democracy.
After an election campaign that has been described as divisive and intensely contested; Donald Trump is set to become the 45th U.S. president following his victory.
Delivering his victory speech, Trump said he would uphold a united America and reclaim the nation’s destiny when he takes over.
He went on to praise his opponent saying: “she fought very hard. She has worked
very long and hard over a long period of time. We have a sense of gratitude for her service”.
Furthermore, while Trump preached unity, he also promised to be  a “President to all American people”, a statement which has so far been greeted with much criticism by analysts who say it is in sharp contrast to many obnoxious comments made by him during his campaign trail.
He however stated that “while the campaign is now over, the work on this movement, is not only just beginning”.
After it was observed that Donald Trump has edged closer to winning the White House with a series of shocking wins in battleground state on Tuesday, Hillary Clinton’s campaign chair, John Podesta, had asked supporters to go home.
She is yet to give her concession speech.

Nigeria’s Executive Council Assesses One Year Performance

Briefing reporters after the Council’s meeting, the Minister of Mines and Steel Development, Dr. Kayode Fayemi, said the meeting reflected on the progress so far, the challenges encountered and the tasks members of the council still have to tackle.
According to him, the Council approved the direct procurement of four-wheel patrol vehicles produced by Nissan for Mines Inspectorate Division of the Ministry of Mines and Steel Development in the 36 states of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory.
He cited the killing of miners in Zamfara State, saying that the ministry for over a decade, does not have surveillance vehicles to check such unfortunate incidence and oversee mining activities in other states.
According to him, the approval was a show of the commitment of the Buhari’s administration to developing mining activities in Nigeria.
The vehicles will cost 326,781 million Naira.
Also the Federal Executive Council ratified the Lake Chad Basin Charter signed in 2012.
The charter will be sent to the National Assembly for enactment into law.
The minister of Water Resources, Suleiman Adamu, who also briefed reporters after the council’s meeting said the lake had been threatened by climate change and that effort was being made to ensure the lake is safe from extinction.
The assessment is coming one year after the cabinet was constituted by President Buhari months after he was sworn in.
The delay had drawn criticisms and had impact on economic activities in the nation, with most investors waiting for the minister’s to be named.

    Pipeline Feeding Forcados Terminal Destroyed

A blast rocked a pipeline operated by Nigeria's state-run oil firm NNPC that feeds the Forcados terminal in the southern Niger Delta energy hub, a community leader and security source said on Tuesday.
The explosion occurred while the pipeline was being repaired following an attack last week, they said.
A week ago, community leaders from the restive region, the source of most of Nigeria's oil, met the president and asked him to pull the army out of the energy hub, order oil firms to move headquarters there and spend more on development to end militancy in the region.
A community leader said it happened at the same location as last week's attack - in Batan, near the southern city of Warri - while repairs were being carried out because "the boys claimed they were not happy" with the work.
"There was a serious fire and most people working narrowly escaped being shot by the gunmen, who opened fire on them," said the leader, who did not want to be identified.
A security official attached to Operation Delta Safe also said the attack took place.
A spokesman for Nigerian National Petroleum Corp (NNPC) had no immediate comment.

Supreme Court Upholds Gov. Seriake Dickson Election

The Supreme Court has affirmed the election of Governor Seriake Dickson as the governor of Bayelsa state.

In a unanimous judgement delivered by Justice Ibrahim Tanko, the apex court dismissed the appeal filed by his opponent in the governorship election, Mr Timipre Sylva on the ground that it lacked merit.
The court also dismissed the cross appeal filed by Mr Dickson challenging the locus standi of Mr Sylva to file an election petition when he was not qualified to contest the election having been previously elected on two occasions as governor of Bayelsa state.
Reasons for the judgement will be delivered on November 18, 2016.
Mr Sylva approached the Supreme Court after the Appeal Court also unanimously dismissed his appeal challenging the victory of Governor Seriake Dickson in the Bayelsa State governorship election.
The court in a unanimous decision of a five man panel presided over by Justice Olukayode Bada resolved all the five issues raised by Mr Sylva and the All Progressives Congress (APC) in favour of Governor Dickson and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP).
Justice Bada, who delivered the lead judgement, held that Sylva and his party failed to prove the allegations of corruption, substantial noncompliance, gross violation of the electoral act and other malpractices in the conduct of the election.
He said that the foundation of the ground upon which the appellants based his case that the December 6, 2015 election was unilaterally cancelled by the State Resident Electoral Commissioner was eroded having participated  fully in the rescheduled election of January 9, 2016

He added that it was established beyond doubt that the decision to shift December 6, 2015 election to January 9,2016 was taken by the Independent National Electoral Commission and parties who participated in the polls.

Trial Of Jonathan's Aide Stalled By Absence Of EFCC Counsel

The trial of Waripamo-Owei Emmanuel Dudafa, the former Special Assistant on Domestic Affairs to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, could not go on Tuesday at the Federal High Court in Lagos, owing to the absence of the EFCC’s counsel, Mr Rotimi Oyedepo.

Presiding judge, Justice Muhammad Idris, told the court that he received a letter from the EFCC counsel seeking for an adjournment.
In the letter, Mr Oyedepo asked the court to grant the adjournment to enable him attend to an appeal filed by Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mr Ricky Tarfa against the commission
Counsel to Mr Dudafa, Gboyega Oyewole, did not object to the request for an adjournment. He however informed the court that he was surprised that his client was not present in court.
Upon enquiry from the prison’s officials, Mr Oyewole said he was told that Dudafa is seriously sick.
He complained about the EFCC treatment of his client.
Justice Mohammed Idris has granted the prosecutor’s application and adjourned the matter till Thursday November 10, for the continuation of the defendants’ trial.
Dudafa and one Iwejuo Joseph Nna, are standing trial before Justice Mohammed Idris on alleged 5.1 billion naira fraud.
In the first count, the defendants on or about June 11, 2013 in Lagos allegedly conspired amongst themselves to conceal the sum of 1.667 billion Naira said to be the proceeds of crime.
The Offence was said to be contrary to Section 18(a) of the Money Laundering (Prohibition) (Amendment) Act, 2012 and punishable under Section 17(a) of the same Act.
In the other charges, Mr Waripamo-Owei also allegedly used six companies – Seagate Property Development and Investment Limited, Avalon Global Property Development Company Limited, Ebiwise Resources, Pluto Property and Investment Company, Rotato Interlink Services and De Jakes Fast Food and Restaurant Nigeria Limited  – to conceal varying sums of money between June 2013 and April 2016.

The EFCC’s Prosecuting Counsel, Rotimi Oyedepo, had listed 21 witnesses to testify against the defendants, including Representatives of some banks.

PMB Mourns Lt Col. Abu Ali, Others

    https://i.onthe.io/vllkyt1vmjhqsj15g8.ff78c6ac.jpg
President Muhammadu Buhari says the sacrifices of fallen officers and men in the war against terrorism in Nigeria would never go in vain, and that their memories would be eternally etched in the hearts and minds of fellow citizens for whose sake they laid down their lives.

President Buhari was reacting to the death of Colonel Abu-Ali, one of Nigeria’s finest and bravest soldiers in recent history.

He said in a condolence statement issued by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, that he was rudely shocked by the news of the officer’s death along with other gallant soldiers during an encounter with the Boko Haram bandits in Borno State.

According to the President, “a courageous commander does not only give orders, but also joins his men to fight the battle, no matter the risks or the obvious danger”.

He explained that the late Colonel Abu Ali “was an extraordinary officer who inspired respect and adoration among those he commanded”, adding that “one of the greatest attributes of a war hero is the ability to help your troops overcome fear in the face of danger”.

President Buhari said that the late Lt-Colonel Ali and his other fallen colleagues had brought glory to the Army and the country for laying down their lives for the sake of others.

In his passionate condolence to the families of the victims and the Nigerian Army, the President also noted that their heroic sacrifices were “so immeasurable that no words can do justice to their patriotism and remarkable courage”.

President Buhari, who personally called Ali’s father, Brigadier-Gen. Abu Ali (Rtd) to console the family, reassured them that the death of Ali and others in battle would never go in vain. “He was a gallant soldier, never to be forgotten. He has brought a good name to the family,” said the President.

He then called on members of the armed forces not to let the tragic incident to dampen their morale and spirit, adding that under no circumstances should the Boko Haram terrorists be allowed to destroy the will of our troops.

He said “evil should not be given any chance to defeat good and humanity”, and that “members of our armed forces should remain formidably united in the war against terrorism”.

Meanwhile, the President has appointed a high powered delegation to be led by the Chief of Staff, Abba Kyari, that includes the Minister of Federal Capital Territory, Mohammed Bello and the Minister of State Solid Minerals Development, Baba Buhari to represent him at the funeral of Colonel Abu Ali and others on Monday November 7, 2016.

According to the Acting Director Army Public Relations, Colonel Sani Usman, the troops repelled the attack and killed 14 Boko Haram terrorists.

However, the five soldiers lost their lives while other soldiers sustained various degrees of injuries during the encounter.

Lt-Col Abu-Ali was the Commanding Officer of 272 Task Force Tank Battalion.
